Feedback and conflict management. The supposed basics of every manager’s toolkit—and a topic employees are always happy to see on their calendars.

Or are they?

Everyday reality often paints a different picture: too little feedback, poor timing, defensive reactions, pent-up frustration, or even conversations where everything has been “said,” yet nothing changes.

Because it’s not just about methods. Attitude, relationships, and context are also crucial. Feedback, for example, can be perceived either as an attack or as a genuine opportunity to learn. Conflicts can be resolved on a factual level or appear “disguised” as relationship conflicts. And without a minimum level of psychological safety, there’s a high risk that conversations will either quickly become watered down or escalate immediately.

So how can I deal with conflicts in a healthy way? What can I do in my role to ensure that feedback motivates me and others?
