Many organizations use GenAI, yet measurable value often remains elusive. AI champions help identify potential and turn it into tangible business value.

The introduction of Generative AI (GenAI) is currently seen as a key component of digital transformation. Many organizations are experimenting with tools like ChatGPT or developing their own AI applications—driven by the expectation of productivity gains, improved decision-making, and reduced workload for employees.

In practice, however, a different picture emerges: despite high adoption rates, measurable success often remains elusive. A large share of AI initiatives stays in the experimental stage, and only a few manage to scale across the organization. The anticipated return on investment frequently fails to materialize.

The reasons for this rarely lie in the technology itself, but rather in how it is implemented. GenAI is not a traditional IT solution with clearly defined use cases—its value only unfolds through concrete, context-specific application in everyday work. This is precisely where many organizations face a key challenge: a lack of orientation, clear responsibilities, and the capability to systematically identify and implement meaningful use cases.

Against this backdrop, a new role is gaining increasing importance: the AI Champion.

AI Champions are individuals within the organization who actively drive AI initiatives, identify application areas, and act as a bridge between technology, business units, and management. They take on a critical translation function—both technically and organizationally—and help ensure that technological potential is turned into real business value.

This presentation demonstrates why this role is crucial for the success of GenAI. Building on recent research findings, it explores the key competencies and activities that characterize AI Champions, how they emerge within organizations, and which factors influence their effectiveness.

In addition, participants will gain practical insights into how companies can systematically develop and embed AI Champions within their organization—from identifying suitable individuals and designing training approaches to structurally integrating the role into existing processes.

The presentation is aimed at executives, practitioners, and anyone interested in the successful implementation of AI in organizations. The focus is not on the technology itself, but on how organizations can move from hype to sustainable value creation.
