How are death, dying, and grief changing in our digital world?
Who owns our memories, data, and digital legacies?
The “Ethik Digital” podcast will be recorded on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 5 p.m. at the Nuremberg Digital Festival. Organized by the “Kirchlicher Dienst in der Arbeitswelt” (kda Bayern), the event will take place at the Evangelischer Campus Nürnberg on Rathenauplatz and will address ethical questions surrounding death, dying, and grief in the digital realm.
Podcast host Rieke C. Harmsen’s guest is Dr. Rainer Liepold. The expert on end-of-life, funeral, and mourning culture is the project manager for the online portal gedenkswert.de.
The podcast discussion will address questions such as:
• Why are we suddenly mourning publicly—and online?
• How does social media affect farewells and remembrance?
• Is digital remembrance a source of comfort or a form of denial?
• How much immortality is contained in our data?
• Grief in the workplace—what can digital memorial pages contribute to a corporate culture of grief?
• What possibilities exist for commemorating deceased colleagues?
Ethik Digital doesn’t look down from above, but dives right in: among screenshots, chat histories, memorial posts, and theological boundary questions. Personal, honest, sometimes uncomfortable—but always relevant.
After the discussion, there will be time for your questions, thoughts, and experiences. Because death concerns us all. Even—or especially—online.
To conclude, kda chaplain Deacon René Steiger will close the event with a brief reflection and a blessing.
