Social media strongly shapes our everyday lives – especially those of young people. At the same time, the debate on how platforms should be designed to promote well-being, particularly mental health, rather than harm it, is growing and becoming more relevant by the day. Yet, while research is increasingly providing insights into the effects of platform design, algorithms, and usage patterns, one key question remains: **How much of this knowledge actually reaches platforms and policymakers?
In this keynote, I will share insights from the European research project PROMISE and highlight key challenges and tensions between scientific evidence, current platform design, and regulatory approaches in Europe.
The talk will be followed by an open discussion:
What kinds of rules and design decisions could improve social media?
How can we balance usage, well-being, and economic interests – especially for young people?
What are your own experiences with regulation, and what expectations or perspectives do you bring?

The session invites participants to reflect on concrete solutions and to bring together diverse perspectives on how to shape better digital environments.
Recommended for: The event is open to all those interested from academia, practice, policy, and civil society who engage with the design of social media. It is particularly relevant for anyone interested in young people’s everyday lives and their mental health in digital environments.
