Language models are everywhere, shaking up our daily lives. But not everything that glitters is gold. Texts, images and videos can be generated at the click of a button. Alternatively, you can quickly ask ChatGPT about health concerns instead of spending hours in a crowded waiting room. But how reliable are they? In this easy-to-understand talk, we’ll explain how these systems work, why they’re sometimes flawed or distorted, and what data protection and ethical issues arise, all without using technical jargon. Using simple examples, we will show you how to recognize AI-generated content and how to protect yourself against misinformation. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of your own domain knowledge and of critically evaluating AI-generated content.

You won't encounter any technical jargon, just practical guidance:

  • Short, clear explanations of how language models work.
  • Examples of risks such as fake news, bias and manipulation.
  • Practical tips and a short checklist for safe use.

The talk combines concise insights with concrete examples, and there is time for a Q&A session. By the end, you will have gained direct, actionable takeaways. This talk is ideal for anyone interested in becoming more confident when working with language models.
