In public debates and media commentary, it is currently often said that the United States is no longer a democracy during Trump’s second term in office. The government and its supporters reject this, and Trump is in fact also a democratically elected president.
The event first takes a scholarly look at this question: How can the collapse of democracy be identified, and to what extent does this apply to the United States? The second part focuses on the “Trump system” and the MAGA movement: mobilization, the securing of power, as well as the special role of digital publics and social media.
The discussion then turns to the future: The drifting of a democracy toward dictatorship is a process with an open outcome. Which scenarios and key moments could determine whether the United States permanently moves away from the central standards of liberal democracy?
Recommended for: The event is aimed at politically interested citizens, students, academics, media-savvy audiences, and anyone who wants to discuss the state of democracy in the United States in a critical, evidence-based, and forward-looking way. It especially addresses people interested in international politics, democracy research, media developments, and the impact of digital publics on political power.
