Tech as salvation? Lovelock & Kurzweil see a future of data-driven divinity. Has technology become the new religion of our digital age?

#AI #Technology #Ethics
Scientists and futurologists such as James Lovelock and Ray Kurzweil view technological development as a kind of salvation story. This includes ideas such as the Homo Deus and even the potential creation of an all-knowing supermachine capable of finally solving all problems on Earth. Technology is meant to help humans rid themselves of their fragility and failings—whether through unification with the machine or through the use of modern biotechnologies promising eternal life. The path of human civilization thus seems to lead toward an Elysium of data flow. If humanity’s salvation is now to be found in technology, does this imply that technology has become the dominant religion of our time? This lecture takes a religious studies perspective on futuristic belief systems of the digital age

Recommended for: Scholars and academics from the humanities and social sciences—especially in the fields of religious studies, futures studies, and technology research—as well as technology enthusiasts, innovators, philosophers, ethicists, students, educators, curious minds, and critical thinkers."
