What happens when informal hierarchies arise in agile teams? We will examine typical roles, conflicts and how to recognize hidden tensions.

Agile mindset and New Work are usually associated with a reduction of formal hierarchies. Decisions are decentralized and self-organized teams can shape their way of working. Unfortunately this does not automatically lead to a harmonious and constructive collaboration. Often the opposite is true. Rank-dynamic conflicts arise and can hinder cooperation. But how does this happen? What patterns do these conflicts follow? And what can we do about it?

On July 2, 2025 we have invited Peter Vatter a professor at FOM University. He researches digital work culture and informal hierarchy. He will introduce us to the peculiarities of group dynamics in the agile context and present results from his research work.
In his lecture he will explain which behavioral patterns are almost "inherited", what different strategies people pursue and what roles emerge from this. Finall, it will not only be about how to assert oneself against "Alphas" but also that collaboration with "more difficult" team members can be very rewarding and enjoyable.
