How the Nuremberg Data Science & AI Meetup brings expert topics to the community
AI isn't a niche topic anymore. But if you really want to understand how it's used, what problems it actually solves—and where it falls short—you need more than just keynote speeches or tool demos. That’s where the Nuremberg Data Science & AI Meetup comes in: it creates a space for expert knowledge, honest conversations, and real talk. It’s where the community comes together to dig into the latest in AI and data science.
The start of a data science community in Nuremberg

The start of a data science community in Nuremberg

The Nuremberg Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Meetup has been around since 2020 – born out of the desire to have open, hands-on conversations about AI and data-driven technologies.

Dr. Johannes Schöck, Senior Data Scientist and long-time attendee, has been part of it from the beginning:
“I’m actually trained as a natural scientist and had set the goal of becoming a data scientist. So I went to everything in the region I could find related to that. That’s how I ended up at one of the first meetups – with just six people attending.”

Since then, the meetup has grown, but the core idea has remained the same: sharing knowledge, learning from one another, and gaining new perspectives.
“You get professional-level input, but also keep a sense of how things are really going with data science and AI in practice and in society.”

What topics the Meetup is driven by

From AI security to ethical questions in data processing – the content of the Nuremberg Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Meetup comes directly from the community. Whether it’s AI security, data governance, or real-world project insights, the topics are wide-ranging, with a constant focus on practical relevance.

“Very often, it’s the fundamental issues in companies and all data-driven projects that really matter: Where do you get the data from, and how does a project like this actually create real value?”

It’s this kind of peer-to-peer exchange that makes all the difference: participants bring real questions, openly discuss challenges, and learn from one another.

How the use of AI is shifting

Discussions around artificial intelligence have become more nuanced. That’s also reflected in the Nuremberg Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Meetup: the focus is no longer just on technological progress in isolation – the conversation is increasingly about meaningful application, asking the right questions, and putting things into realistic context.

“Even years ago, during data science training, we were taught that AI is just a tool – but not the right one for every problem.”

This perspective has now become common in many companies as well. The community is more openly discussing limitations, conditions, and trade-offs – especially in the context of generative AI. Tools like GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT are being used, but they're seen as a means to an end.

“For most companies, there are only limited use cases for generative AI.”

Many participants bring their own experiences – including with generative AI. The meetup creates a space where these kinds of questions can be openly discussed: What solutions actually deliver real value? And where do tools like Copilot or ChatGPT fall short in practice?

Insights into a meetup-evening

An evening at the Nuremberg Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Meetup kicks off casually with drinks and some initial conversations. After that, there are usually one or two talks on changing focus topics, often followed by spontaneous lightning talks from the audience.

“These range from current projects to exciting new discoveries and even funny failure stories. You don’t need to prepare slides for it, and new faces are always welcome!”

What makes the meetup special: it’s intentionally open to anyone interested in data science and AI – regardless of experience level or professional background.

“It’s rare that the talks are so specialized that only experts can follow them. And even then, it’s still a great opportunity to connect and talk about AI, data science, and all sorts of other exciting tech topics.”
After the main content, there’s time to network over pizza, beer, or just good conversation. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the format thrives on participation. The meetups take place about once a month, with occasional breaks. New topics, speakers, and contributors are always welcome.

The next meetup will take place on January 29, 2026. You’ll find all the info about dates, topics, and registration on the Meetup page—just take a look and join in!
